Subject Descriptions
Elementary Math is delivered using multimodal techniques, which focus on concept formation and the procedural aspects of math. We also reinforce other areas of learning by using literature based math and projects. Students frequently work with manipulatives, and games designed to facilitate the retention and comprehension of fundamentals while strengthening concept formation by addressing foundational weaknesses.
Advanced Math (geometry, algebra II, pre calc and calculus) encompasses the above multimodal instructional delivery methods, and focuses on critical thinking and analysis. During our session we focus on “The Why” behind mathematical concepts and their relation to other disciplines of study.
General and Advanced Science topics are taught with equal focus on both theory and its application to real world problems. Subjects are taught with an integrative approach encompassing previous science courses as fundamental reinforcement to the current concepts and theories being explored.
Social Studies/History: Is taught in the form of a story with a focus on the social, political, and economic aspects and impacts on civilizations. Timelines and organizational techniques are used (such as diagrams and Webs) to facilitate comprehension. Whenever possible we focus on history’s impact on modern societies.
Reading: recovery programs are taught by certified reading specialists, emphasis is not only placed on decoding and fluency, but also comprehension and analysis. We use a variety of traditional, and non- traditional reading methodologies such as the Barton Program, Visualizing and Verbalizing, Slingerland, Seeing Stars, Zoo Phonics, etc.
Language Arts / English: (AP English and Advanced Literature) English programs look specifically into the analysis of text, character analysis, identifying themes, motifs, how to answer inferential and deductive questions, and literary elements as used throughout the text.
Writing: pre-writing through AP composition courses encompass structure and mechanics in all forms of writing to include: creative, narrative, expository writing, and poetry.
Foreign Languages: All levels of language acquisition from basic to advanced conversation. We look at the reading, writing, and cultural/historical perspectives of each language.
Standardized test prep courses for: (test prep for SAT and ACT include registration for exams) HSPT, ISEE, SSAT, SAT I & II, ACT, etc.
